If you are like 75 % of pregnant women you have experienced lower back pain during your pregnancy. Usually the pain comes on during the later months and becomes worse as the pregnancy progresses. However there are many ways to alleviate the lower back pain that occurs during pregnancy. Many of them can be done while you are home.
Causes of Low Back Pain during Pregnancy
1) Weight gain-typically pregnancy can add 30-35 pounds of extra weight to carry around. This puts more stress on your spine, and the growing baby can also put pressure on the nerves and blood vessels in the back
2)Hormonal changes- Relaxin is a hormone the body makes during pregnancy which loosens the joints and ligaments to prepare the body for childbirth. This can also cause instability in the spine as those ligaments also relax, leading to pain.
3)Muscle weakness-as the stomach stretches during pregnancy the abdominal muscles become looser and can sometimes seperate at the seams in the middle.
Types of Low back pain
There are 2 main types of lower back pain that occur during pregnancy. The first is lumbar pain which will be felt mostly in the low back and is like pain you may have experienced before pregnancy. It is usually felt around the waist, can be aggravated by sitting or standing for long period , and gets worse towards the end of the day. It can also radiate into the legs. The second type is posterior pelvic pain which is felt lower in the back, usually in the buttocks or the back of the thighs. This pain can be aggravated by walking, lifting, getting up and down from a chair or bed and lifting. When you are bending at the waist you can irritate pelvic pain You will probably feel this pain over your pubic bone.
