Vertigo and Chiropractic

Vertigo is a common presenting symptom in a chiropractic office  .Vertigo is a condition where a patient feels as if there is motion when there is none.  It can cause problems with balance  and can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting.  It can have many causes and in most cases it is a treatable condition. The treatment used depends on the cause. That is why the chiropractor has to take a complete history and do a  thorough examination when you  come in for treatment of this condition.

One of the most common causes of vertigo is Benign Paroxsymal Positional Vertigo or BPPV. It commonly comes on in sudden episodes, and usually it comes on for unknown reasons.  Some of the causes can be

Head trauma

Virus or allergies

Inner ear infections

The Drs at Merrick Chiropractic will take a thorough history and perform a neurological exam to determine if there is a cause for your BPPV.  Many times there is no known reason why this condition occurs.

Treatment for BPPV

At Merrick Chiropractic the Drs perform the Epley Maneveur and may prescribe Brandt Daroff exercise for the patients to use at home.

These procedures uses several simple and slow maneuvers for positioning the head.  It is the hope that these movements allow the particles of the semicircular canals of the inner ear to move to an area of the ear where they can be resorbed without trouble.  The positions are each held for about a half of a minute until abnormal eye movements and other symptoms cease.

Most BPPV can be treated without medication. Try chiropractic treatment instead to give you a natural and more permanent solution to our vertigo problems
